Hi Ryan,
I use various programs, samplers, keyboards, compressors,
and eqs.

And on to your question;
I use Sonar (the new Cakewalk) to sequence the beat on my
PC. Many people also use Cubase as well as Logic. All of these
sequencers will get the job done. When you have a lot of equipment,
you have to use a sequencer to make all the pieces work together.
I use the MPC 2000xl and the EMU SP 1200 for the drums. I
started with the SP 1200 and it did me justice but I usually
use the MPC now. It makes the drums cut through the mix. I
won't make a beat without it!
I use the EMU E4xt ultra for
sampling. I love this sampler because it automatically raises
the level of your sample and makes it bigger each time you
sample. It also has an amazing amount of sampling time and
I can organize my samples with ease.
I use all kinds of keyboard modules to make my beats. I'm
spoiled with a lot of different sounds to pick from. I usually
use only one sound from each keyboard to make a beat. For
example, I like a bell from the Roland, the string from the
Kurzweil, and the bass from the Korg MS2000r. I'll use them
all in one rap beat to get the best sound I can find. Here
is a list of my keyboards: Korg TR Rack, Korg MS2000r, Kurzweil
2000r, Roland JV2080 w/ expansion, Proteus 2000 w/ expansion,
Mini Moog, Wurlitzer, and ocasionally, I'll even dust off
the Ensoniq ASR10.
I also use various EQs and compressors.
They are essential to making the beat fat with a professional
sound. It is a huge part of making rap beats but it is often
over-looked. The right EQs and compressors are also very expensive,
but when used correctly, they can be well worth the money.
I guess that about does it. Damn, I
got a lot of equipment now. LOL!
